Why am I running for Haines Borough Assembly?
Democratic Governance
Our community flourishes with diverse perspectives and intergovernmental cooperation. Our government can only work if all diverse voices are equally considered in decision-making. As an assembly member, I try to create opportunities for public forums on complex topics that impact our community. It is only through talking with each other that we can build trust and understanding for collaborative problem-solving.
Fiscal Responsibility
We illustrate our values as a community with the money we spend and the places we spend it.
I support an adequate Haines Borough budget for our schools and basic services in our community. These priorities include early childhood education and care, elder care and services, infrastructure to support our core industries - fishing, tourism, and community services.
Our Future
Housing. Renewable energy. Climate adaptation planning. New economies. We have big ideas. We also know how fast our lives can change. Planning and investment for our future begins with the dreams, planning, risk assessments, and decisions we make now. In 2023-24, I supported a Haines Borough Comprehensive plan that considers future food security, storm preparedness and necessary emergency response services, and sound infrastructure to support our community in times of need. I will support the implementation of this plan should I be re-elected to the Haines Borough assembly.
“Healthy lands and waters make healthy communities. Stewardship begins at home.”
Hunting, fishing, harvesting, berry picking, gardening - our community is outside on the land and in the water. I have spent over twenty years as a research scientist across Alaska’s lands and waters. I understand the deep connections between our health and the health of our surrounding environment. I hope to continue to bring my knowledge and expertise of environmental planning and permitting to public discourse if re-elected as a Haines Borough Assembly member.
